A journey of faith in the midst of battle

The story begins in Hanoi, Vietnam, where Mrs How Nguyen and her children had their lives transformed by Jesus. It was after her sister-in-law accepted Jesus as her Lord that a curiosity began to grow. The sister-in-law went from being arrogant and dismissive of others to being full of humility and love, which inspired Mrs How Nguyen to seek the source of this change.

The turning point came when her son suffered a serious illness. Despite many hospital visits, doctors diagnosed him with irreversible brain damage. In desperation, she turned to prayer and began to believe in Jesus as her healer. In 2013, she and her children started believing, something her husband could not accept and he forbade the family to go to church.

However, her faith persisted. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she reconnected with her church community through online services and started studying theology. She and her children were baptised in 2021, marking a new chapter in their lives. But the road there was far from easy.

As a teacher, her newfound faith came under scrutiny from local authorities. Her commitment to her students, who adored her, was overshadowed by accusations that she was following a “cult”. Complaints were sent to education authorities and government bodies, leading to investigations.

There was also turbulence in her private life. Her husband and his family pressurised her to abandon her faith. This escalated into abuse, forcing her to leave her home with her children for their safety. She left all her possessions and relied solely on her faith in God. Despite these sacrifices, she found comfort in the words she felt God spoke to her: ‘Do not be afraid, for I am with you.’

In 2023, her husband filed for divorce, citing her faith as the reason. Even in court, he admitted that she was an exemplary wife and mother, but he could not accept her devotion to God. After the divorce, she devoted herself entirely to Bible school, where she found strength and purpose.

Through mission trips in her hometown, she witnessed remarkable results. Over 50 people, including engineers and government officials, came to Christ through her testimony. Her faith grew stronger with each step and she felt God’s promise to empower her for greater works.

Looking ahead, she sees herself as an instrument of God’s work, eager to fulfil his promises. Her journey reflects resilience, unwavering faith and the transforming power of God’s love.

LOBC-Team: Healing and restoration in Bolivia

It was Wednesday morning when we arrived, exhausted after a dramatic 36-hour journey and running on barely two hours of sleep. A kind man from a local church picked us up and welcomed us into his home. As we sat together making small talk, he began to sing a Swedish worship song, sharing from his time as a missionary there. In that moment, the weight of the journey caught up with us, and we began to cry. Questions filled our minds: what was going to happen on this trip, could God really use us like this, and did we even have the strength to be there? He gently encouraged us to rest, and after a short nap we were picked up by the pastor and reunited with the rest of the team. After breakfast and several hours of sleep, we felt more alive—still tired, but ready. We were reminded that in our weakness, God is our strength.

I have always wanted to come back—and now, finally, I am here again. Walking these streets, meeting the people, and sensing God’s presence so strongly reminds me that His timing is always perfect.
