We got to experience a different world, form lifelong friendships, and be part of making a difference.

When we took over the overall responsibility for IndianChildren this past spring, it felt extra special. Not just because of the important work, but also because we would once again get to work alongside the friends in Kolkata who have faithfully remained in the work for over 16 years.

In August, we traveled down to meet our coworkers, visit our projects, and most importantly, to meet all the children. The monsoon rains had lingered a bit longer than usual, but the warmth of the children’s welcome more than made up for it!

Currently, around 450 children receive daily education, nutritious meals, and health checkups through IndianChildren. Homework help and support after school make a big difference, especially for children whose parents are illiterate. Seeing this firsthand is deeply moving – the children’s sense of security, curiosity, joy, and dreams of the future clearly show the value of our work.

A few hours’ journey north, in Pakur, we visited the boys’ and girls’ homes where over 270 girls and 130 boys live, eat, and go to school in a Christian and loving environment. The children welcomed us in the traditional way – with music, dance, and flowers – a fantastic reception! Football was a natural gathering point, and outside nearly every room, a group of football shoes stood ready for the next match. The man who leads the boys’ home grew up there himself and is now passing on the same security and care to the next generation. A powerful example of how the work has a lasting impact!

Another unforgettable moment was meeting the 25 boys who come to the center every evening to receive food, love, and education. Many of them are orphans and work during the day, but here they get a meal, a shower, a chance to learn to read and write – and most importantly, the feeling that someone cares about them.

A week goes by quickly, but the impressions remain. A warm thank you to all our sponsors who make this possible. And to those of you who are not yet sponsors – welcome to join us in lifting children in India out of poverty and giving them a brighter future!

Shirin & Björn Bryne
Secretary Generals, IndianChildren

Sixteen years ago, we traveled for the first time to Kolkata together with our two young sons.
